Jazz & Tzaz Magazine (translated from Greek)
A large proportion of young jazz musicians have studied at the
major (and very expensive, at least according to what most can afford)
music schools in the United States. Andre Canniere and his five-member
group are no exception to that rule, since every one of them has
graduated from the Eastman School of Music.
In any case we cannot say that the group sounds academic or detached
from the real world. Canniere's music is a blend of electric and
acoustic sounds, open to the pop/rock attitude and phraseology with
trades through the indie routes. His compositional style draws from
several contemporary influences including Dave Douglas, Michael
Brecker and Bill Frisell, as well as Radiohead, often refering to both
large and small ensemble traditions. With the four
studio tracks, the slow burner and melodic “As Of Yet”, the fusion
ballad “Bridges”, the Balkan inspired “Accelerated Decrepitude” and the
mournful indie rock tune “The Rest”, we listen to the group moving eclectically
through various styles, while with the three live selections that
complement the album, we get a clear concept of how they sound when
they become more natural, looser and freer. In both situations they
prove
that although they had been together as a working group for only a few
months, they were already functioning
collectively and had crafted their own personal (worth
checking out) sound with
their recording debut."
